We are two sociologists striving to find a balance between conducting social research and filmmaking. In 2013 we were in Medelin on 5-month internship in the field of participatory urban planning and civic engagement. That was when we decided to make a film about participatory budgeting. Being able to live and work in the dynamic social scene of Medellin made us rethink the concept of democracy and civil engagement in politics.
This movie is the record of our everyday reality we experienced in Medellin, and a way to say „thank you” to people who showed us how social alternatives can be put into practice. La Comuna 9 became more that a subject of scientific research; it became the space where we learned a lot about community, solidarity and social struggle.
